Match report Fine weather greeted the first league game of the season. After winning the toss the hosts were asked to bat first by skipper Figg. The Birchanger innings started brightly with 50 on the board, in good time, before Matt Hartnell was introduced to stem the flow of runs. You Joe Scanlon took two good catches off Matt's bowling and a well held catch by Willy off Jonesy hated the hosts progress. Matt Hartnell went on to complete 10 excellent overs with wonderful figures of 5 maidens, 3 for 11. Corporal Jones worked hard on an unresponsive pitch to claim 3 wickets. Steve Hume also bowled well taking 3 wickets. He was abley supported by Joe Scanlon (5 overs for just 8 runs) and Rob 'Dutchy' Holland with 4 good overs and a wicket on debut. With only captain Richardson scoring any significant runs after the opening partnership, Birchanger were restricted to 143 all out in 41.4 overs.
With a team full of all rounders it was important the two Matching Green openers put on a good stand. Steve Byford was out in the first over for 4 and Skipper Figg in the second over for 5! With Roosey and Steve Parker both out for ducks the Matching innings was floundering at 28 for 4. Matt Hartnell decided that attack was the best form of defence and scored a very brisk 43 to put the innings back on course. After Matt was trapped lbw, Steve Hume and Danny Andrews batted with great patience and progressed to score towards the winning target. Danny was caught for 21 and it was left to Joe Scanlon to knock off the winning runs. The whole innings was held together with a poised 33 not out from Steve Hume which undoubtably secured the win.
