Match report Winning Run Ends as Matching Misfire on the Green

MGCC's run of victories came to a shuddering halt this Saturday when the visitors Buntingford took best advantage of the wet and muggy conditions to come out deserved winners.

This middle of the table clash saw two sides both go for a positive result with the final result hanging in the balance right up to the final ball of the match.

Stand-in skipper Steve Hume won the toss and put Buntingford in. Openers Brown 1-31 and Nichol 1-40 struggled to find their recent outstanding form albeit restricting 'Bunt' to 33 from the first 10 overs. Openers Walker (82) and Pearson (68) then went on the rampage - Matt Hartnell 0-38 from 4 overs getting some serious abuse. Bashford 0-47 also failed to make any in-roads as Matching, without their skipper Bowerman looked oddly out of sorts in all departments.

As it turned out, the first 20 overs of the match was certainly the best time to bat on the damp wicket and as the match went on, the bounce got steadily lower and there was far more movement off the seam for the 'Bunt' bowlers to work with.

It was only a crazy runout aided by skilful fielding by Bibby that removed Pearson for 68 and Mugsy taking a catch again from the Matching man of the match Bibby that sent Walker back to the hutch. Junior then removed Lewis for 7 with the help of a catch from young Tom Hobbs and Ash Nichol claimed his one wicket clean bowling Trevaskiss for a quick 18.

'Bunt' finished their innings, restricted to 40 overs, on 210.

MGCC's reply started with a flourish from Bashers who smashed 16 from the first over. His stay was shortlived however. as 'Skat' Atkins snared him in his next over. The loss of Mugsy (5), Hobbs (0) and Hume (8) left the Green in dire straits at 54-4.

With Si Hartnell at the crease the game was still there to be won - But the match swung in favour of the visitors with the removal of the famous Hartnell double act. First to fall was Prince Edward Hartnell for 21 and when his younger brother was stumped for 62 - Matching's batting options were quickly running out and the home side were drinking in the last chance saloon.

Dave the Pikey stepped into the middle with Junior. He went on to make 15 with Junior outstanding to the last, smashing 31 to take the conclusion into a real nail-biter. With the last pair at the wicket, Junior hit a 6 and a 4 to leave the hosts just 21 for victory with another two and a half overs to go. Young Sam Figg (5 no) gained valuable crease experience in the competitive arena of a top Division Two showdown.

The match was 'put to bed' when, looking for another boundary, Bibby danced down the wicket only to be stumped from a ball going down the legside for an entertaining 31 - Matching finishing on 190 all out
