Match report Matching youth policy wins through

Majority of runs scored by ages 16 and below including league debut 50s for Tom and Ambi

With virtually a full team of regular league players missing for one reason or another captain June precided over the youngest league team ever assembled by Matching Green. So young were the team that the Hadham skipper queried at the start of the game when all the men were going to turn up to give them a decent game!

Captain June started the day well by winning the toss and accepting he had a weaker team than usual to captain decided to insert the home side. The Hadham openers struggled against the guile and experience of Bryan Russell and the youthful zest of Tom Hobbs, who unusually bowled a first over maiden! Bryan completed his 10 overs for a miserly 16 runs, 8 of which came from 1 over. Tom took 2 wickets, one in each of his spells.

The brakes were really applied to the middle of Hadhams innings as Aussie Ash swang the ball viciously from the tennis court end taking a well deserved 4 wickets. Browny struggled on a sluggish pitch and will look forward to his next encounter! There was some excellent fielding from the younger element with Charlie Bass taking a superb catch over his head and Sam Figg producing some excellent ground fielding. Tom Figg also claimed 2 sharp catches in the gully, but dropped a simpler one while arguing with brother Sam over who's catch it was!! With some aggressive late order hitting from Aussie import McName, Much Hadham eventually reached a respectible 194.

The slowness of the pitch meant that 194 was never going to be an easy task especially when 'old-man' Figgy went cheaply in the second over. Eamesey was joined by Tom Figg who proceeded, once again to show his father how to bat. Eamsey eventually fell caught and bowled for 19 which brought 14 year old Ambi to the crease. Showing experience and bravery beyond his tender age, Ambi, along with Tom then took the Hadham bowling attack apart. and shared a 64 run partnership before Tom blasted a ball straight to deep mid off for an excellent 57

Not put off by the departure of Tom, nor the swift exit of Browny for 10, Ambi continued to steadily build his score wisely defending the straight ball and making hay on anything wide or in particular short outside off stump. With Tom Hobbs joining him with an excellent 22 not out and Ambi finishing the innings on 67 not out, these two starlets saw Matching to the winning total with ease and with seven overs to spare. With the combined age of Tom and Ambi less than that of Lord of all Lordiness, some where heard to mention they had ten times the sense of the 'great one'.

On reflection the Matching total of 198 included just 29 runs made by players over the age of 16! Much Hadham skipper left swiftly at the end of the game ... with his tail between his legs!!
