Match report Five Wins on the Spin for Matching

Men from the Green storm into 2nd place in Division Two

Matching Green's winning five match run continued on Saturday with yet another spirited and determined performance against promotion rivals Hockerill - who at kickoff were ahead of Matching in 2nd place in Div.2.

The visitors won the toss and put the home side in on a wet and slow track - Very similar to the conditions in the match two weeks earlier against White Roding. This decision looked a good one when returning opener and local 'Toff', Peter Liversidge made a quick reaquaintance with the middle as he lasted three balls before returning to the hutch in despair with a big fat 0 and a wedding ring.

Wickets then fell at an alarming rate including the important 'engine-room' of Figg (4) Bowerman (5), Hartnell (12) and Hume (6) as the early conditions made batting a very difficult proposition.

At 51-5 Matching were staring down the barrel until the introduction of a certain Mr Brown.....

David Brown joined the steady Mike Bashford (54) and proceeded to play himself in and then unlease against the tiring Hockerill attack. He went on the make 72 not out including 3 sixes and 8 fours. This was enough to go into tea with a modest yet healthy 183 on the scoreboard - The worm was beginning to turn......just like the butter in the sandwiches....

In reply, Hockerill struggled against the lanky pace of Brown (2-21) and the unlucky Aussie Nichol (0-24). Progress was slow and when Bashford came on at the 'Limes End' the balance of play seemed to swing further towards the hosts. Bashford, following his 6 wickets against Championship winners White Roding, once again found his top form to bag another half dozen, and in the process, completely tearing through the middle order of the visitors. 'Bashers' went on to finish with figures of 6-19 from 10 overs and just three new injuries to his hamstring, back and metatarsal bone.

Ash Nichol once again bowled his heart out in this his last game for the Green, but finished wicketless for the first time ever in Pommieland. Junior Bibster provided the entertainment for the crowd with his 2-23 from 9.1 overs and colourful vocal support for his teammates.

There was no stopping the Green today and victory was duly completed with the dismissal of J Clarke for 6 from a inswinger from the Bib merchant. The good times looked like they were returning for the Green.

MGCC leapfrog over Hockerill into 2nd place - Promotion will be decided next week against Newport. If Matching win, then it's the Premiership next summer and the gloom of the 'Hartnell' relegation years will be long forgotten.
