Thorley II v Matching Green Cricket Club Matching Green 2nd XI on Sat 17 May 2008 at 1:30pm
Matching Green Cricket Club Won by 12 runs

Match report An under-strength team took to the oasis of Thorley where the rain never falls for round 3 of this year's league season. On winning a vital toss skipper Martin Figg had no hesitation in batting first mainly because he had seven men present (including 3 colts) but had the promise of 3 men to follow. The plan was for a solid start and for obvious reasons, not to loose early wickets. Objective achieved as Figg and Byford secured another 50 opening partnership. Despite a wet, slow pitch the Matching batsmen were not troubled by the Thorley bowlers and it was a case of the batsmen getting themselves out rather than being got out. Solid contributions were made by Byford, Figg, Martin Lovatt and Dennis Udall. As the Matching innings drew to a close it was left to a solid 18 not out from young James Jackson and a sparkling 33 not out from debutant Steve Johnson (selected fresh from the Chequers the night before) to secure what appeared to be a commanding 173 for 7.

After a delicious tea including fresh strawberry scones (the Matching skipper's favourite!) Thorley 2nd's set about their reply. Due to their late arrival Matching skipper held back Russell and Wilson and decided to open up with inform Dennis Udall and young starlet Jed Scanlon. Thorley were soon in trouble with Jed taking a cooly taken catch off Dennis's bowling and Jed himself dismissing the other opener with Willy taking the catch. After skipper Smithen was trapped lbw by Udall the Thorley middle order began to fight back. A steady 46 from Aitken was the lynchpin of the recovery. When he was joined by Paul Sydes the match began to tip in Thorley's balance but some typically accurate bowling from Willy and Russell made for an exciting finish. The reintroduction of Dennis to the attack removed the stubborn Aitken and once Willy had caught and bowled Sydes for a hard-hitting 52 the Thorley challenge was up. Dennis and Willy cleaned up the tail with Willy taking 2 for 22 and Dennis a magnificent 5 for 22 with Thorley falling 12 runs short and just one over left.

The Thorley captain and his players should be congratulated for their extremely sporting behavior. To give the last wicket to fall out lbw with an over to go in such a close game was nice to see (although it really was plum!!).

Man of the Match – Shared between debutant Steve Johnson for 33 and Dennis for 5 for 22
