Matching Green Cricket Club Matching Green 2nd XI v Hockerill III on Sat 07 May 2005 at 1:30pm
Matching Green Cricket Club Won 3 runs
Match report
Our inaugural 2nd XI match was certainly one to remember. With a team made
up from promising youth players, seasoned veterans and born again players
skipper Martin Figg was delighted to achieve a score exceeding 200 on the
new team's first outing.
After loosing the toss and being asked to bat first there was apprehension
abound! A solid opening partnership between Steve Byford and Paul Prowse
eased the nerves. Paul was bowled for 14 and was swiftly followed by the
hapless Danny Andrews without troubling the visiting scorer. Steve was
joined by another debutant in Mark Wilson. Steve and Mark added a further 55
runs before Steve fell straight after reaching a well earned 51. Mark's
innings of 23 included some well struck boundaries. Robert Falconer played
well before falling to a good ball from the visiting skipper Merv Tompson.
The innings really took shape then with a partnership of 77 between skipper
Martin Figg and 12 year old Colin Falconer. Colin defended stoutly and took
advantage of the bad balls he received in scoring 10 invaluable runs.
Martin's innings of 66 included some well struck boundries. With the score
approaching the magic 200 mark it was left to the youngsters in the tail to
secure the maximum batting points. Adam Hobbs finished with 6 not out and
Peter Stiles surprised all, including himself, with a huge six into the pond
in his 11 not out. Not only the first 6 Peter had scored but also his first
boundary! Oddy didn't trouble the scorer safe in the knowledge Stilesy was
to follow!
If the batting was a pleasant surprise the quality of the bowling was
amazing. Peter Stiles, with his express pace opened from one end and despite
struggling with his run up showed much promise. Martin 'Oddy" Ormondroyd
showed his experience at the other end despite bowling into a stiff wind.
The remaining four bowlers used had not bowled a competitive ball between
them for over 15 years, with two of them never bowling before! John Binder,
on a welcome return to the club proved he'd lost non of his bowling skills
and bowled 7 tight overs taking 2 for 28. 'Action Man' Mark Wilson in his
first ever match bowled 10 overs straight off with the amazing figures of 2
for 31 including a maiden. Paul Prowse recovered from a wayward start to
record figures of 1 for 33 in 5 overs and the impressive Danny Andrews
claimed an amazing 2 for just 13 runs in 4.4 overs.
Hockerill made a real challenge to our score and with one over remaining
needed just 4 runs to win, and rooky Andrews was the bowler. Matching's
never-say-die attitude saw them through as Hockerill lost their last wicket
with 2 balls to go. Hockerill finished on 198 all out.
The enthusiasm shown by all the players was a delight and the game was
played in the very best of spirit thanks to, despite them losing, the
friendly nature of the Hockerill team.
At the end of the game the jubilant Matching players retired to The Chequers
to recollect a truly memorable day.
