Match report
Figgy's claret and white army back to winning ways.
MGCC II Back to Winning Ways.
The 2nd XI had the unenviable task of being the first team to bat on the
newly relaid Stort first team square last Saturday after skipper Martin Figg
lost the toss and his side were asked to bat first.
While the ball was hard MGCC's first three, Steve Byford 29, Paul Prowse 16
and Ganesh Walkey 15, began well but as the ball softened the unreliability
of the bounce in the pitch became more apparent. Batting just got harder and
harder. After the dismissal of the top order the 'soft under belly' was
exposed and only a patient 56 from the skipper and a supporting 15 from Paul
'Ed' Edmondson helped the score over 150 to 156 or 8. In the circumstances
the most pleasing fact was that for the first time this year the second team
had managed to bat out all their overs.
Stort's most successful bowler was Seecheram with 3 for 33 from 9 overs, but
special mention should be made about youngsters the Fitzpatrick brothers and
Tim Poulter who performed brilliantly with a fine combination of seam and
leg spin.
In reply, Stort got off to the worst possible start loosing both openers in
the first couple of overs, Fitzpatrick to a brilliant caught and bowled by
Zac Miller and Seecharan to a sharp slip catch by the skipper off Steve
Parker's bowling. A brief recovery was then interrupted by the introduction
of Danny Andrews who has consistently performed well over the last few
games. He bowled his 10 overs straight off and well deserved his 4 wickets
for just 25 runs.
Dan was well supported at the other end by the economical
Mark Wilson whose 10 overs went for just 22 runs (10-4-22-1). After the ex-Spurs Reserve goalie had removed the Stort middle order it was left to youngster Tim Poulter to show
the last piece of Stort resistence. His 30 included some well struck fours
but when he was clean bowled by Paul Prowse Stort were left high and dry 19
runs short of their target.
