Match report
City Slickers meet their match in Green folk.
The Handymen XI assembled on behalf of former village cricket captain Mike Hands played out a largely entertaining draw last Sunday at the Theatre of Has-Beens. The boys from the big city were put in and soon set a rapid pace reaching 100 inside 14 overs. The variety of bowling from Oddy, Bibbs and Muggs was quite ineffective in restricting Phil (58) and J Hands (46) from scoring freely.
Simon 'The Exocet' Jefferies was phenomenal in striking the stumps 4 times with throws from the outfield, twice sending Handymen scampering back to the pavilion.
Captain Rob (2 catches) and youngster Styles slowed the run rate briefly, with Pete 'Hollywood' Weaver snaring a sensational (?) diving catch at midwicket. A reverse sweep by Rob Hands for four was the highlight before declaring at 234-9 at tea.
JR and Muggs soon took up the challenge of needing over 6 runs per over for victory. Both made half-centuries against largely useful bowling (Handyman Headband excluded). An opening partnership of 172 off 27 overs was broken when Muggs, 79 (new PB!) was caught in the outfield, and JR (70) followed shortly in similar fashion.
Decent bowling by Durado (2-42) and Rob Hands (4-26) restricted any of the following MGCC batsmen to keep the needed pace and close in on victory. Final score was 197-6 and honours even.
