Newport v Matching Green Cricket Club Matching Green 1st XI on Tue 18 Aug 2020 at 5.30pm
Matching Green Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Boardman's Davies Cup SEMI-FINAL.

Matching Green won a very tight, low scoring game at Newport by 5 wickets with just an over remaining.

Newport, having won the toss, elected to bat first to get the best of the light conditions. After a lot of recent rain the pitch looked green and the outfield long. It was clear from the start this was not going to be a high scoring match.

With Matty Taylor delayed in traffic it was left to brother Jonny and Charlie Bass to open the bowling. Jonny, in particular, managed to swing the ball into the right handers and Charlie bowled with pace and accuracy but with little luck. The Newport openers of Powell and Key started cautiously, no doubt worried about the slow pace of the pitch. After Jonny and Charlie claimed an opener each, both clean bowled, the Newport middle order really struggled to come to terms with the Matching bowling and the pitch. It was a good partnership between Fairall and Brown, more than doubling the Newport score, that helped them reach, what seemed, a barely defendable total of 63 in their 16 overs. Jonny Taylor finished with impressive figures of 4 overs, 2 maidens 2 wickets for 4 runs. Two wickets each for Charlie Bass and Matty Taylor completed the wicket-takers.

Having watched the Newport batsman struggle to get to grips with the pitch, the Matching openers also decided that big shots were the way forward. This approach was clearly flawed and the Newport bowlers were very soon taking wickets. The whole top order failed to grasp the conditions and all were caught playing false strokes. The bowling of Billy Powell and Oakes was also very tight and they were certainly not going to allow Matching to win easily without a fight.

Enter the wise 'old' head of 16 year old Will Cutlan-Smyth batting at 6 and the evergreen club Chairman Simon (Lordy) Hartnell batting at 7. Both of them quickly worked out that, with the field set back for the mis-hit and with a big outfield, there were plenty of ones and twos available. With 'tip and run' cricket and well placed shots for two, the pair rebuilt the inning with great effect. As confidence grew the odd boundary was mixed in with some audacious ramp shots from young Will and the Newport fielders could see the match disappearing before their eyes. Will finished on a fine 30 not out and he was ably assisted by a puffing and panting, run off his feet, Lordy on 16 not out.

Matching Green reached their target with just one over remaining and now compete in the Boardman's Davies Cup final at Bishop's Stortford CC on Sunday 13th September at 2pm.
